BHN 2018 World Conference

The biannual Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), World Conference was held November 6­–9, 2018, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Conference Center in Gilbert, Arizona. The BHN World Conference 2018 was attended by 72 Huma Gro®, Huma Gro® Turf, and Probiotic Solutions®  product distributors and users representing 18 countries.

Conference attendees were welcomed by BHN President and CEO Lyndon Smith in an opening address with a theme of “Integrity Is Power.” The conference included two days of product information and education presentations, including the official launch of the company’s new Fertilgold® Organics product line for organic agriculture. An awards banquet was held on Thursday evening, and on Friday attendees had an opportunity to tour a local farm and to go horseback riding.

Conference attendees will be receiving an email link to view and download event photos at Flickr. Presentation PDFs have been posted to the BHN Hub; presentation videos will also be posted on the BHN Hub in coming weeks.

BHN alternates its biannual World Conferences in Arizona with regional conferences held on odd-numbered years. The next regional conference will be held in Turkey in 2019.

BHN’s R&D Director Honored With Two 40-Under-40 Awards

Rita Abi-Ghanem, PhD, Senior Director of Research and Development at Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), has recently been selected for two 40-Under-40 awards. The first, from The Phoenix Business Journal, recognizes Arizona leaders under the age of 40 who are making major strides in their careers and are having a positive impact on their communities. Forty individuals were selected for this award from a field of 420 industry-leading nominees. The second, the Fruit + Vegetable 40 Under 40, is given by the editors of Fruit Growers News and Vegetable Growers News to outstanding young industry professionals who are demonstrating exceptional commitment to making their mark in the industry through innovation and leadership.

The Phoenix Business Journal award will be given at an August 2nd event at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Fruit + Vegetable award will be given at the 2018 Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable & Farm Market Expo in Grand Rapids, Mich., on December 4.

Dr. Abi-Ghanem—a native of Lebanon and a Fulbright Scholar who earned her doctorate in Soil Science from Washington State University—states that she is deeply honored to have been selected for these two awards, and she was quite surprised when notices about her selection for these two unrelated awards with similar names arrived just a day apart. BHN CEO Lyndon Smith stated that he and everyone else at BHN are very proud of Dr. Abi-Ghanem’s accomplishments, and he is pleased that others in the local and national communities are recognizing her contributions to agriculture.

Dr. Abi-Ghanem is an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University (WSU) and serves as a member of the Humic Products Trade Association Science Committee; the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation Research and Education Committee; and the Arizona Department of Agriculture Pesticide Advisory Committee. She is former Chair of the Women-in-Science Committee of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), and is current co-chair of the SSSA Representation and Recognition Task Force. She is currently also serving a 2-year term as a member of the Agricultural Science Committee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Science Advisory Board (SAB) and is an executive board director of the Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development (AIARD).

Dr. Abi-Ghanem was further honored last year when she was presented with the AIARD 2016 Young Professional Award. That award cited Dr. Abi-Ghanem’s early work in assessing seed-borne diseases on wheat and barley landraces in a rural area that borders Syria and participation in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Agricultural Research Connections 2013 Workshop in Kenya. She also participated in the Iraq Agricultural Extension Revitalization Project, in which she and others from Washington State University and four other American universities trained Iraqi agricultural extension agents and scientists through sessions held in 2007–2008 in Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.

BHN Presented With USDC Export Achievement Award

The United States Department of Commerce (USDC) has awarded Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN) an Export Achievement Certificate in recognition of recent accomplishments in the global marketplace. The certificate was presented to BHN CEO Lyndon Smith in Phoenix by Congressman Andy Biggs (Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District).

In presentation remarks, it was stated that, “For the past 8 years, Bio Huma Netics has worked closely with the International Trade Administration, especially here in Phoenix, to identify capable global partners and understand foreign countries’ regulations. Presently, Bio Huma Netics exports its products to over 30 different countries in Latin America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Their global success is proof positive that an Arizona-based manufacturing company can successfully overcome market entry obstacles and achieve noteworthy success in almost any international market.”

BHN CEO Lyndon Smith stated that Bio Huma Netics is very proud of its international sales success and appreciative of this recognition from the United States Department of Commerce. He attributed BHN’s global success to its Huma Gro® line of liquid fertilizers that increase the quality and yield of previously low-producing crops, providing sustainable-agriculture food products while commensurately preserving the environment and the earth’s natural resources.

MVH’s Bruce Reid Receives the 2017 HPTA Above and Beyond Award

Bruce Reid, former majority owner and general manager of Mesa Verde Humates® (MVH), has been awarded the 2017 Humic Products Trade Association (HPTA) Above and Beyond Award. The Above and Beyond Award is presented annually to a hard-working individual whose effort and influence have contributed to HTPA’s mission. As a founding HPTA member who was active in several of its committees, Bruce provided ongoing leadership and valuable insights to the HPTA organization, and he also worked to increase awareness of humates in many different areas. The HPTA credits Bruce with networking activities that brought people into the industry and with promoting the HPTA to industry experts. The 2017 Above and Beyond Award was presented to Bruce with appreciation for his tireless work and dedication.

The HPTA is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 to advance commercial trade of humic products through scientific and regulatory cooperation. The objective of the HPTA is to set the standard of excellence of humic trade by establishing professional standards for its members and for certification of humic products. BHN Welcomes Jamie Olivarez to the Huma Gro Sales Team

Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), has selected Jamie Olivarez to be California Sales Agronomist for its Huma Gro® product line. Mr. Olivarez will be based in Sacramento, California, and will be responsible for all Huma Gro® sales and technical support for the Northern California area.

Mr. Olivarez has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from California State University, Chico, along with minor degrees in chemistry and biology. He has worked for several years as a field agronomist, and he has 9 previous years’ experience working in both the public and private sector areas of the biosolids field, including as a regulator for the Washington State Department of Ecology.

BHN Executive Vice President of Sales Justin Smith commented, “We are very excited to have Jamie representing Huma Gro® products in Northern California. Having grown up in agriculture in the northern Sacramento Valley, he has an in-depth, personal knowledge of the crops and crop production for that area, and he has an excellent understanding of the growers there and the problems they face. BHN’s Heather Jennings Receives TAPPI Division Leadership & Service Award

Heather Jennings, Senior Project Engineer for Probiotic Solutions® at Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), was presented the Division Leadership & Service Award by the TAPPI Women in Industry Division at the PaperCon meeting in Ohio on April 16. The Award was presented in recognition of Ms. Jennings’ outstanding leadership and exceptional service. She was a co-founder of the TAPPI Women in Industry Division in 2015 and has been division vice chair since that time. She will assume chairperson duties for the division in 2019.

TAPPI is a not-for-profit, volunteer-led association that is built around a community comprising thousands of member engineers, managers, scientists, academics, suppliers, and others from around the world who are involved in the papermaking industry. TAPPI Divisions grant awards to individuals in recognition of outstanding accomplishments or contributions to the industry’s technology or the TAPPI organization. Each technical division may grant no more than one award for leadership and service per year. BHN President and CEO Lyndon Smith stated, “I’m very proud of the work Heather has done with TAPPI, particularly in terms of supporting and promoting roles and opportunities for women in industry. Ms. Jennings has been with BHN since 2015. She has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Brigham Young University and has 15 years of engineering experience.

Probiotic Solutions® is the BHN soil and wastewater bioremediation division that assists industries such as food processing, municipal wastewater, pulp and paper, chemical refineries, and others who use water in their processes to treat and return safe, clean water to the environment.

Bio Huma Netics Appoints New CFO

Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), President and CEO Lyndon Smith has announced the appointment of Scott Bostwick to the position of Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Bostwick replaces Mike Smith, who is retiring after almost 30 years with the company. BHN produces the Huma Gro®, Huma Gro® Turf, Probiotic Solutions®, and Mesa Verde Humates® product lines.

Mr. Bostwick, an Arizona State University graduate, completed his certified public accountant (CPA) exam in 2007 and, after working in various accounting and finance positions for government and private companies, joined BHN as Senior Director of Accounting in 2014.

Lyndon Smith said, “Mike Smith has been our strong right arm at BHN for nearly 30 years. He provided conservative steady financial guidance through a period of rapid company expansion. With Mike’s insights and contributions sales grew ten-fold, and he has built a solid financial structure that will ensure our success well into the future. This has been especially felt as we launch our new product line, Fertilgold® Organics, in the coming months. I will miss my daily interaction with Mike, but I’m also very confident that Scott has the financial leadership capabilities we need to continue BHN’s growth and success.”

Bostwick said, “Mike Smith has been a terrific mentor and friend to me over the past 4 years, and he has helped me to become well prepared to provide BHN’s financial guidance going forward. Mike has agreed to remain available to BHN on a consultant basis, and it is great to know that he is there for assistance should a need arise. BHN is a great company, and I am excited to be able to take the financial leadership role in continuing a legacy of success.”

Bio Huma Netics Achieves Responsible Ag Certification

Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), the maker of Huma Gro® and Fertilgold® Organics crop nutrition and protection products, has achieved Responsible Ag certification for its fertilizer manufacturing facilities.

Responsible Ag is the only program in the nation that provides a voluntary comprehensive assessment of a fertilizer manufacturer’s compliance with federal regulations. Certification requires that a facility meet stringent regulatory-based criteria, implement industry-leading safety and security measures, and demonstrate that facility safety is the company’s highest priority.

The Responsible Ag certifying organization was founded in 2014 to promote the public welfare by assisting agribusinesses to comply with federal environmental, health, safety, and security rules regarding the safe handling and storage of fertilizer products. Participation in the program assures community members, employees, and emergency responders that participating agribusinesses are acting responsibly.

Arizona Agribusiness Roundtable

We at BHN/Huma Gro® were very pleased to be a sponsor for the Arizona Agribusiness Roundtable on December 4 at the PERA Club in Tempe. This year’s roundtable was titled, “A National Perspective on Agriculture: The Farm Bill and You.”

The Agribusiness Roundtable is a collaborative effort by the Arizona Department of Agriculture and the Agribusiness & Water Council of Arizona, Inc. Established to develop a “collective,” proactive point of view about Arizona’s future, this third annual meeting focused discussion on the importance to Arizona and national agriculture stakeholders of export trade agreements, immigration reform for the farm workforce, and proposed regulations for the 2018 Farm Bill.

Guest speakers and roundtable participants were from a number of national agriculture associations, including the National Milk Producers Federation, National Grain & Feed Association, National Cotton Council, AmericanHort, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, United Egg Producers, Western Growers Association, and the National Pork Producers Council. Also featured were Dr. Barbara Glenn, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture; Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam, UC Davis; Paul Schlegel, American Farm Bureau Federation; Tom Davis, President, Agribusiness & Water Council of Arizona; and Mark Killian, Director, Arizona Department of Agriculture (and member of the BHN Board of Directors).

Latest Edition of the BHN Newsletter, The Solution, Is Available

We love to hear stories from the people who use our products, and a number of those stories are included in this issue of The Solution. We begin with a report from Holden Research and Consulting on how use of certain Huma Gro® products on strawberries led to an ROI of over $3,400/acre. Amazing! Equally amazing is a report from Plant Sciences showing how effective Promax® is at controlling 8 strawberry pathogens. It seems that Huma Gro® and strawberries have an affinity for each other.

In our Probiotic Solutions® section we report on a case study involving a small town in New Mexico that was in need of reducing the sludge in its wastewater treatment system lagoon in order to meet state requirements. After 300 days of using Bio Energizer®, sludge was reduced to the point where the town had regained capacity to better handle the incoming flow and meet its permit requirements without dredging.

On the back page we share some videos out of Colombia, South America, from postings to the Huma Gro® groups on WhatsApp. Any story that involves a mule has got to be interesting, and the video showing hand foliar application of Breakout® on rice from San Jacinto del Cauca does not disappoint.
