BHN Approved to Import Fertilizers to Brazil

Bio Huma Netics, Inc., producer of Huma Gro® and Fertilgold® Organics liquid crop nutrition and protection products, has been granted an unlimited import license to bring fertilizers into Brazil for commercial sale.

Brazil is one of the top 4 agricultural producers in the world, one of the largest agricultural exporters, and one of the largest consumers of fertilizers. BHN has been operating under a limited import license during the past year, which has allowed it to bring in small amounts of product for growers to try in anticipation of future sales.

Justin Smith, Executive Vice President of BHN Sales, said, “This is an incredible opportunity for us, one we’ve been working toward for over 2 years. Brazil’s fertilizer sector is growing rapidly, and they are particularly hungry for technologically advanced fertilizer products such as ours. We have terrific local operations and sales staff in place who are well connected throughout the Brazilian agricultural industry. This is a perfect time to introduce our Huma Gro® line of liquid fertilizers with Micro Carbon Technology®, and it won’t be too long before we also bring in our Fertilgold® Organics product line, as well. We conservatively estimate $4–$5 million in sales the first year, and it could grow much higher.”

BHN currently has 20 Huma Gro® liquid crop nutrition and protection products registered for sale in Brazil and will begin shipping immediately. Registered products are in the categories of Macronutrients, Micronutrients, Growth Managers, Soil Fertility, Organic Acids, and Biopesticides. It All Has to Start With The Soil

The Soil Health Institute has released a 60-minute documentary, Living Soil, that captures the history — and significance — of the soil health movement.

Our soils support 95 percent of all food production, and by 2060, our soils will be asked to give us as much food as we have consumed in the last 500 years. They filter our water. They are one of our most cost-effective reservoirs for sequestering carbon. They are our foundation for biodiversity. And they are vibrantly alive, teeming with 10,000 pounds of biological life in every acre. Yet in the last 150 years, we’ve lost half of the basic building block that makes soil productive. The societal and environmental costs of soil loss and degradation in the United States alone are now estimated to be as high as $85 billion every single year.

Living Soil captures the background of the current soil health movement and its momentum, beginning with painful images of the Dust Bowl, and then transitions to personal experiences of innovative women and men who are managing their land to enhance soil health.

The film features rural and urban farmers from Maryland to California, selling everything from corn to bouquets, united by their care for the soil.

The documentary is directed by Chelsea Myers, founder of Tiny Attic, a video production company located in Columbia, Mo. that specializes in documenting real moments and real people.

BHN’s Dr. Abi-Ghanem Selected to Speak at Soil Society Leadership Panel

Dr. Rita Abi-Ghanem, Senior Director of Research & Development at Bio Huma Netics, Inc., has been selected to speak as part of a Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) panel discussion on Leadership at the 2019 International Soils Meeting, “Soils Across Latitudes, on January 8, 2019, in San Diego, California. Dr. Abi-Ghanem will be representing an Industry perspective. Other panelists include Dr. Johannes Bouma, Emeritus Professor of Soil Science, Wageningen University, Netherlands (International); Dr. Alfred Hartemink, Professor of Soil Science and Dept. Chair, University of Wisconsin, Madison (Academia); Dr. Ole Wendroth, SSSA Incoming President-Elect, Professor at University of Kentucky (SSSA); and Dr. David Lindbo, Director of Soil Science Division, United States Department of Agriculture (Government).

The panel discussion will be held at 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon on Tuesday at the Sheraton Hotel, Spinnaker 1. The discussion will be focused on professional leadership skills needed by students, post-docs, and early career members.

Dr. Abi-Ghanem—a native of Lebanon and a Fulbright Scholar who earned her doctorate in Soil Science from Washington State University—was honored earlier this year when she was selected for two 40-Under-40 awards sponsored by The Phoenix Business Journal and jointly by the editors of Fruit Growers News and Vegetable Growers News. She was previously presented with the Association for International Agriculture 2016 Young Professional Award. She has been Senior Director of Research & Development for Bio Huma Netics, Inc., since 2014.

World Soil Day is December 5

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations sponsors World Soil Day every December 5 to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and the sustainable management of soil resources. Sponsored every year since 2014, this year’s theme focuses on soil pollution. Here is an excerpt from the World Soil Day Website:

“These days pollution is a worry – and soil is also affected. Soil pollution is a hidden danger that lurks beneath our feet.

“1/3 of our global soils are already degraded. Yet we risk losing more due to this hidden danger. Soil pollution can be invisible and seems far away but everyone, everywhere is affected. With a growing population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, soil pollution is a worldwide problem which degrades our soils and poisons the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. The entity of the problem is still unknown as not certain data are available on a global scale.

“Soils have a great potential to filter and buffer contaminants, degrading and attenuating the negative effects of pollutants, but this capacity is finite. Most of the pollutants originate from human activities, such as unsustainable farming practices, industrial activities and mining, untreated urban waste, and other non-environmental friendly practices. As technology evolves, scientists are able to identify previously undetected pollutants, but at the same time these technological improvements lead to new contaminants being released into the environment. In the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals 2, 3, 12, and 15 have targets that commend direct consideration of soil resources, especially soil pollution and degradation in relation to food security.

“It is time to uncover this threatening reality. Combatting soil pollution requires us to join forces and turn determination into action. Be the solution to soil pollution.”

BHN 2018 World Conference

The biannual Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), World Conference was held November 6­–9, 2018, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Conference Center in Gilbert, Arizona. The BHN World Conference 2018 was attended by 72 Huma Gro®, Huma Gro® Turf, and Probiotic Solutions®  product distributors and users representing 18 countries.

Conference attendees were welcomed by BHN President and CEO Lyndon Smith in an opening address with a theme of “Integrity Is Power.” The conference included two days of product information and education presentations, including the official launch of the company’s new Fertilgold® Organics product line for organic agriculture. An awards banquet was held on Thursday evening, and on Friday attendees had an opportunity to tour a local farm and to go horseback riding.

Conference attendees will be receiving an email link to view and download event photos at Flickr. Presentation PDFs have been posted to the BHN Hub; presentation videos will also be posted on the BHN Hub in coming weeks.

BHN alternates its biannual World Conferences in Arizona with regional conferences held on odd-numbered years. The next regional conference will be held in Turkey in 2019.

Huma Gro® App Released for iOS Smart Phones

The Huma Gro® app for iOS smart phones has been released and is available for free at the Apple App Store. The Huma Gro® App provides a foliar application calculator for determining how much product to apply to specific crops on any size of field based on lab analysis, a continuously updated product document library, a product mixing guide, the ability to save product application data and calculations by field, and continuous news and feature updates from the Huma Gro® Website blog.

Fertilgold® Organics Earns Certification for 10 Initial Organic Fertilizer Products

Fertilgold® Organics, a new brand of organic fertilizer products from Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN) headquartered in Gilbert, Ariz., has achieved Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) listing for 10 initial products. Of these, 6 OMRI-listed liquid crop nutrition products are based on the company’s proprietary nutrient carrier, Micro Carbon Technology®, which carries nutrients to plants more effectively than traditional organic nutrition products. Those 6 initial Fertilgold® Organics liquid products include Fertilgold® K-6 (potassium), Fertilgold® B (boron), Fertilgold® Ca (calcium), Fertilgold® Mg (magnesium), Fertilgold® Micros I (a balanced mix of S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn), and Fertilgold® Zn (zinc). The other 4 initial OMRI-listed products include dry humic/fulvic acids that are milled to different granular sizes for various uses (Fertilgold® Powder, Fertilgold® Greens, Fertilgold® 1–3 mm, and Fertilgold® 6 mm[-]). BHN’s R&D Director Honored With Two 40-Under-40 Awards

Rita Abi-Ghanem, PhD, Senior Director of Research and Development at Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN), has recently been selected for two 40-Under-40 awards. The first, from The Phoenix Business Journal, recognizes Arizona leaders under the age of 40 who are making major strides in their careers and are having a positive impact on their communities. Forty individuals were selected for this award from a field of 420 industry-leading nominees. The second, the Fruit + Vegetable 40 Under 40, is given by the editors of Fruit Growers News and Vegetable Growers News to outstanding young industry professionals who are demonstrating exceptional commitment to making their mark in the industry through innovation and leadership.

The Phoenix Business Journal award will be given at an August 2nd event at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Fruit + Vegetable award will be given at the 2018 Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable & Farm Market Expo in Grand Rapids, Mich., on December 4.

Dr. Abi-Ghanem—a native of Lebanon and a Fulbright Scholar who earned her doctorate in Soil Science from Washington State University—states that she is deeply honored to have been selected for these two awards, and she was quite surprised when notices about her selection for these two unrelated awards with similar names arrived just a day apart. BHN CEO Lyndon Smith stated that he and everyone else at BHN are very proud of Dr. Abi-Ghanem’s accomplishments, and he is pleased that others in the local and national communities are recognizing her contributions to agriculture.

Dr. Abi-Ghanem is an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University (WSU) and serves as a member of the Humic Products Trade Association Science Committee; the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation Research and Education Committee; and the Arizona Department of Agriculture Pesticide Advisory Committee. She is former Chair of the Women-in-Science Committee of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), and is current co-chair of the SSSA Representation and Recognition Task Force. She is currently also serving a 2-year term as a member of the Agricultural Science Committee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Science Advisory Board (SAB) and is an executive board director of the Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development (AIARD).

Dr. Abi-Ghanem was further honored last year when she was presented with the AIARD 2016 Young Professional Award. That award cited Dr. Abi-Ghanem’s early work in assessing seed-borne diseases on wheat and barley landraces in a rural area that borders Syria and participation in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Agricultural Research Connections 2013 Workshop in Kenya. She also participated in the Iraq Agricultural Extension Revitalization Project, in which she and others from Washington State University and four other American universities trained Iraqi agricultural extension agents and scientists through sessions held in 2007–2008 in Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.

BHN Presented With USDC Export Achievement Award

The United States Department of Commerce (USDC) has awarded Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN) an Export Achievement Certificate in recognition of recent accomplishments in the global marketplace. The certificate was presented to BHN CEO Lyndon Smith in Phoenix by Congressman Andy Biggs (Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District).

In presentation remarks, it was stated that, “For the past 8 years, Bio Huma Netics has worked closely with the International Trade Administration, especially here in Phoenix, to identify capable global partners and understand foreign countries’ regulations. Presently, Bio Huma Netics exports its products to over 30 different countries in Latin America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Their global success is proof positive that an Arizona-based manufacturing company can successfully overcome market entry obstacles and achieve noteworthy success in almost any international market.”

BHN CEO Lyndon Smith stated that Bio Huma Netics is very proud of its international sales success and appreciative of this recognition from the United States Department of Commerce. MVH’s Bruce Reid Receives the 2017 HPTA Above and Beyond Award

Bruce Reid, former majority owner and general manager of Mesa Verde Humates® (MVH), has been awarded the 2017 Humic Products Trade Association (HPTA) Above and Beyond Award. The Above and Beyond Award is presented annually to a hard-working individual whose effort and influence have contributed to HTPA’s mission. As a founding HPTA member who was active in several of its committees, Bruce provided ongoing leadership and valuable insights to the HPTA organization, and he also worked to increase awareness of humates in many different areas. The HPTA credits Bruce with networking activities that brought people into the industry and with promoting the HPTA to industry experts. The 2017 Above and Beyond Award was presented to Bruce with appreciation for his tireless work and dedication.

The HPTA is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 to advance commercial trade of humic products through scientific and regulatory cooperation.
